Three structures, three regulatory frameworks, three sets of thresholds. A plain explanation of what separates them before you look at any one product.

Three structures, three regulatory frameworks. The distinctions that matter are not about returns — they are about how the money is held, who decides, and what you are able to see.

Why the comparison is usually framed wrongly

These three are typically set against each other as though they were competing products with performance to be ranked. They are not products. They are structures — containers within which a very wide range of strategies, risk levels and underlying assets can sit.

Asking whether PMS is better than an AIF is close to asking whether a company is better than a partnership. The answer tells you something about the container and almost nothing about what has been put inside it. Two funds under the same framework can behave nothing like each other.

The questions that do distinguish them are structural, and they are worth understanding before any individual product is discussed.

How the money is held

Portfolio Management Services

Securities are generally held in an account in the investor's own name, with a manager operating under an agreed mandate. The practical consequence is visibility: the individual holdings are identifiable, and they are yours. Performance is specific to your account rather than to a pooled average.

Alternative Investment Funds

A pooled vehicle. The investor holds units in the fund rather than the underlying assets, and the fund invests according to a stated strategy. This brings features that PMS generally does not have — a defined tenure, capital frequently drawn down over time rather than committed at once, and access to assets that are difficult to hold individually. AIFs fall into categories that differ in what they may invest in and how they may use leverage.

Specialised Investment Funds

A more recent framework, introduced to sit between mutual funds and the structures above — intended to permit strategies more flexible than a mutual fund allows, within a regulated wrapper at a lower threshold than the alternatives. Because the framework is new, its operating detail is still settling, and anything specific should be confirmed against the current regulations and the offer document rather than against a general description.

The differences worth asking about

Beyond how the assets are held, five structural questions separate these frameworks more reliably than any performance comparison:

  • Minimum investment. Set by regulation, different for each, and revised from time to time. Worth confirming against the current position rather than a remembered figure.

  • Liquidity and exit. Whether money can be withdrawn on request, only at intervals, or not until a defined tenure ends. This is frequently the difference that matters most in practice and the one considered least.

  • How fees are charged. Fixed, performance-linked, or a combination — and where performance-linked, over what hurdle and measured across what period.

  • Where tax is paid. This varies by structure and by category within a structure. Whether tax arises at the fund level or in the investor's hands is one of the larger practical distinctions between these frameworks.

  • What you can see. Reporting frequency and the level of underlying detail disclosed differ considerably.

Where the choice is actually made

Not by ranking the three. By the purpose the money is serving, the horizon it is being committed for, the liquidity that must remain available, the concentration that already exists elsewhere in the portfolio, and the tax position of the person investing.

An investor whose wealth is already heavily concentrated in their own business is not really choosing between frameworks on expected return. They are choosing on what each does to a concentration they may not have measured.

Before any of it

Investment is not simply about finding the highest-returning product. Different investments serve different purposes, and risk, liquidity, time horizon, taxation and the intended use of the money all influence which avenue is appropriate.

None of these three structures is inherently superior, and none is suitable by virtue of its category. Thresholds, regulatory treatment and tax positions are set by regulation and do change — any specific figure should be verified against the current regulations and the relevant offer document before it is relied upon.
